tilde Filmmaking Workshop #1: Storytelling Through Film

Facilitated by Rohan Spong

Dates: Saturday 1 April – Sunday 2 April 2017

Venue: Footscray Community Arts Centre, 45 Moreland Street Footscray VIC 3011

Price: FREE

Storytelling Through Film is the first in a series of free filmmaking workshops produced by tilde: Melbourne Trans and Gender Diverse Film Festival. Developed specifically for trans and gender diverse people and their allies, the workshops will explore different aspects of filmmaking and equip participants with the skills to produce films that are by, for or about trans and gender diverse people.

In Storytelling Through Film, participants will use the accessible technology available on smartphones to explore the craft of storytelling. The 2-day workshop will cover shot composition, sound recording, story structure and basic editing, and will be facilitated by established Australian independent filmmaker Rohan Spong. Notable for his minimalistic approach to documentary filmmaking, Spong operates almost entirely on his own; producing, directing, shooting and editing all his own work. His feature-length documentaries T is For Teacher (2009), All The Way Through Evening (2012) and Winter at Westbeth (2016) have received critical acclaim.

Films made by participants as part of this workshop will be screened at this year’s tilde festival at Footscray Community Arts Centre in October.

If you are a trans or gender diverse person or ally and are interested in attending this workshop, please complete the online application form. You will need to bring a smartphone or other filming device with you to use during the workshop. If you do not have access to one, please contact us as we may be able to assist. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people of colour, people with disability, young people and people living in regional areas are strongly encouraged to apply.
